This guide covers Focal Control, the app you use to run every heater in your space at once. To adjust a single heater, at the unit or for one guest, see Individual Heater Control.
Logging in
Focal emails you a unique login link and a password. Open the link, enter your password, and you’re in. There’s nothing to download to get started.
Add it to your home screen
Focal Control runs in your browser, but you can save it to your home screen so it opens like an app.
Open Focal Control in Safari, tap the Share icon, choose Add to Home Screen, then confirm.
Open Focal Control in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, choose Install and Create Shortcut, then confirm.
Accessing the menu
Tap the menu icon in the upper left corner, next to the Focal logo. The menu has three sections: Heater Control, Scheduling, and Settings.
The two modes
Focal Control always runs in one of two modes, and knowing which one you’re in explains almost everything the system does.
Schedule Mode manages the heat for you. Inside the hours you set, heaters turn on when guests sit down and turn off when they leave. At closing, everything shuts off automatically. This is the mode you’ll run day to day.
Manual Mode hands full control to you and your guests, with no automatic shutdown. It’s meant for stretches when you want the heaters on outside your normal hours. Because nothing turns off on its own in Manual Mode, don’t leave the system in it overnight.
Set your schedule
From the menu, tap Scheduling and turn on Schedule Mode.
Select the days you're open, then set a start and end time for each. Tap Save Settings when you're done.
Skip an upcoming holiday
Open Scheduling, uncheck the days you’re closed, and tap Save Settings. The heaters stay off on those days and pick your normal schedule back up afterward.
How heat levels get set
Heat runs from OFF (0) up to HIGH (3). In Schedule Mode, when a heater turns on for guests, Focal sets how hot it runs based on the outside temperature:
- Below 55°F: Level 3 (HIGH)
- 55 to 60°F: Level 2
- 60 to 65°F: Level 1
- 65°F and above: no heat
Any manual change, whether from you or a guest, always takes priority over the automatic level.
The Heater Control page
This is your home base. At a glance it shows the current mode, your schedule status, the next shutdown time, and overall system health. It also has the All Heaters control for pushing a level to the whole space at once, and a zone map that shows where each heater sits, with a purple side and an orange side for the two guests each heater covers.
Warm the space before service
Use the All Heaters control on this page to push a heat level to every heater at once. This works any time you’re inside your scheduled hours, so it’s the quickest way to take the chill off before guests arrive.
Run the heaters outside your hours, just once
From this page, switch to Manual Mode, run the heaters as long as you need, then switch back to Schedule Mode when you’re done. Your saved hours stay exactly as they were. Just remember that Manual Mode has no automatic shutoff, so don’t leave it running overnight.
How Schedule Mode behaves
Outside your scheduled hours, the heaters stay disabled. If someone tries to turn one on at the unit during that time, it flashes yellow to show it can’t run yet.
Inside your hours, heaters turn on when guests sit down and turn off when they leave, at the level set by the outside temperature (see How heat levels get set). Any change you or a guest makes overrides the automatic level for that heater until the next cycle.
